Technical standards on water quality have been established by a number of professional organizations including the U.S. National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) which is now CLSI and College of American Pathologists (CAP). These organizations classify water into grade 1-3 or types I-IV depending on the level of purity. The guidelines test for the amount of ions, organics, pyrogens, particles, colloids, and bacteria and classify the water based on the amount left over after treatment. Many applications require further treatment based on other factors.
